Free Cultural Events Bring Life to the Heart of Nicosia This Summer

This summer, the historic Axiothea Mansion in the heart of Nicosia once again opens its doors to the public as part of the 29th University of Cyprus Cultural Festival. Running from June 5 to July 14, the festival offers a rich programme of music, theatre, dance, film and cultural performances that celebrate creativity, dialogue and community. Many of the events are free, making culture accessible to people from all walks of life.¹

Free Events for Families and Communities

Among the highlights are two free workshops taking place on June 7: Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Paper-Cutting. Open to both children and adults, these workshops introduce participants to traditional Chinese folk arts recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The sessions will be held in English and offer a unique opportunity for intercultural learning and exchange. Booking is required.¹

The festival also includes a wide variety of performances that bring together different artistic traditions and communities. Audiences can enjoy storytelling, shadow theatre, live music, contemporary dance, traditional music and theatrical productions inspired by literature and history.¹

A Festival That Connects People

The programme reflects the multicultural character of Cyprus and highlights artistic voices from different backgrounds. Events explore themes of identity, memory, migration, tradition and belonging—topics that resonate strongly with the diverse communities that make up modern Cyprus.¹

For many residents, especially families, students, refugees and people facing economic challenges, free cultural events provide a valuable opportunity to participate in public life and experience the richness of the island’s cultural landscape.

Culture for Everyone

At a time when the cost of living continues to affect many households, initiatives that offer free access to arts and culture are more important than ever. They help ensure that cultural participation is not a privilege but a shared community experience.

Caritas Cyprus encourages everyone to explore the festival programme and take advantage of the free events available this summer. Whether attending a workshop, a concert or a theatrical performance, these moments of connection help strengthen the social fabric of our communities and remind us of the value of coming together.
