Electronic Rent Payments Become Mandatory from 1 July 2026

Starting from 1 July 2026, all tenants in Cyprus will be required to pay their rent using a recognised electronic payment method.

This new requirement aims to ensure that rent payments can be properly documented and verified when necessary.

What payment methods are accepted?

Rent payments must be made through one of the following methods:

  • Bank transfer;
  • Debit or credit card;
  • QuickPay, Revolut, or other recognised electronic payment services;
  • Any other officially accepted electronic payment method.

Cash payments supported only by handwritten receipts will no longer be considered sufficient proof of rent payment.

What should tenants do?

If you are renting a property, you should speak with your landlord as soon as possible to agree on an electronic payment method.

You may wish to:

  • Ask your landlord to provide their IBAN number so that you can make bank transfers;
  • Arrange payments through QuickPay, Revolut, or another electronic payment service if your landlord agrees;
  • Keep copies of all payment confirmations and transaction records.

If you are unsure how to set up electronic payments, Caritas Cyprus may be able to help you understand the available options.

Keep proof of your payments

It is important to keep evidence of every rent payment you make.

The authorities may request proof that you are complying with this requirement. In such cases, you may be asked to present:

  • Bank statements;
  • Transfer confirmations;
  • Electronic payment receipts or transaction histories.

Handwritten receipts will no longer be accepted as proof of rent payment.

Prepare now

Although the requirement takes effect on 1 July 2026, tenants are encouraged to prepare in advance. By discussing payment arrangements with your landlord now and switching to an electronic payment method, you can ensure compliance and avoid future difficulties.
