New Law on Prepaid SIM Cards in Cyprus: What You Need to Know

A new law in Cyprus now requires everyone who uses a prepaid SIM card to register it with an official identification document. This includes both Cypriot citizens and foreign nationals living in the country.

What Has Changed

Until now, prepaid SIM cards could be bought and activated anonymously. From now on, all users must register their SIM card under their name. This process helps telecom providers link each SIM card to a verified ID.

If you do not register your number within the required period, your SIM card may be deactivated, and you could lose your phone number.

What Documents Are Accepted

When registering, you must show official identification, such as:

  • A Cypriot ID card or passport (for citizens and EU nationals)
  • An Alien Registration Card (ARC) or residence permit (for third-country nationals, including asylum seekers and refugees)

⚠️ Important: Registration for people using ARCs or other foreign documents must be done in person — not online.

Where and How to Register

You can register your prepaid SIM card directly with your mobile provider (for example, Cyta, Epic, or Primetel).
For Cyta customers using soeasy cards, information is available here:

Cyta is also running an information campaign with:

  • SMS messages to current users
  • Posters and translated leaflets in multiple languages
  • Mobile units visiting areas where migrants and foreign workers live and work
  • Information in stores, on social media, and radio
What It Means for Our Beneficiaries

For many people supported by Caritas — especially asylum seekers, refugees, and migrant workers — this new rule may require additional steps:

  • You will need to visit a store in person with your identification document.
  • Make sure your ARC or residence permit is valid and matches the name used on your SIM.
  • If your card is not registered before the deadline, you risk losing access to calls, mobile data, and messages.
  • If you recently changed your phone number or lost your document, contact your provider as soon as possible for guidance.
