Getting settled in a new place is always difficult and even more so if there’s a language barrier. Learning Greek will unlock more opportunities in work, education, and social integration for a newcomer, but resources can be scarce and navigating the ones that exist can be difficult. Here’s a short list of some leads:

🏠 Caritas Cyprus

Here at Caritas, we organize an open classroom every Friday at 11 AM for learning Greek in a fun and casual way. It’s not a formal course, so continuous attendance is not required. You can drop in and out whenever you like.

🏫 Ministry of Education – Adult Training Centres (Epimorfotika)

These are evening classes held at middle and high schools across Cyprus. They offer a variety of subjects, including Greek language lessons. Registration opens in September every year.

They offer Greek classes both online and in-person. Check out their list of programs and contact them to ask when the next course registration opens.

🎓 School of Modern Greek – University of Cyprus

The university provides a limited number of places in its language courses free of charge for refugees. These are structured and high-quality classes taught by professors. They are normally very expensive—so, it’s worth applying whenever registration opens.

🌍 Online Resources for Learning Greek

• HelloTalk – Once you are able to read and write in Greek, HelloTalk is a great place to practice by chatting with native Greek speakers.
• Kypros.org – Teaches standard Greek through listening lessons. Transcripts provided so you can follow along.
• Duolingo – Offers a complete Greek course using visual aids and a game-like design to increase retention. Great for complementing a course.
• Language Transfer – Uses a different learning method to speed up language learning by drawing parallels between your native language and Greek.
• GreekPod101 – Video lessons available on YouTube.

📚 Free Greek Classes for Adults – “Milo Ellinika”

Learning Greek can open doors to better communication, integration, and new opportunities in Cyprus. Starting February 27, 2024, free beginner Greek classes will be available for adults at the Solidarity Counseling Center in Nicosia. Classes are held every Monday & Thursday (17:30-19:00) and every Tuesday & Friday (15:00-16:30), in partnership with Akelius.
