Birth Registration in Cyprus: What You Need to Know
📌Why is Birth Registration Important?
Registering your child’s birth is the first step in securing their legal identity and rights. A birth certificate is essential for accessing healthcare, education, and legal protections. It is also required when applying for asylum or residency for your child.
📌How to Obtain a Birth Certificate for Your Child?
Step 1: Collect the Birth Registration Document at the Hospital
Before leaving the hospital, make sure to obtain the Birth Registration document. This is an official record confirming your child’s birth details. Please note that the child may have up to 3 first names; the surname must be the mother’s or the father’s.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents
When applying for a birth certificate, you will need to present:
✅ Identity Documents (originals):
- Residence card OR Confirmation Letter and Alien Registration Certificate (ARC).
- Original passport OR an official copy (if your passport is held by authorities).
- If you cannot provide a passport, you must swear an affidavit in court confirming your family details. Here’s the affidavit form.
✅ Marital Status Documents:
- If married: Present your marriage certificate and a copy of the father’s identity document. The father’s name will be included on the birth certificate even if he is not in Cyprus.
- If not married and have no other children: The father’s name will not be included unless he is in Cyprus and acknowledges paternity. Both parents must swear affidavits in this case.
- If not married but have other children: You must swear an affidavit in court stating the details of your other children. If the same father is listed on their birth certificates, his name can be added to the new child’s birth certificate (you must provide supporting documents).
