Cycle Safely—Wear a Helmet!
Riding a bike is a great way to get around, stay active, and enjoy the outdoors. However, safety should always be a priority. Here are some tips to keep you safe while cycling and information about fines for non-compliance in Cyprus.
Cycling Safety Tips
- Wear a Helmet: A helmet can save your life in case of an accident. If you don’t have one, helmets are available for free at the Caritas. (See the end of this post.)
- Use Bike Lights: When cycling at night or in low-light conditions, it’s mandatory to have front and rear lights on your bike to ensure visibility.
- Stick to Bike Lanes: Whenever available, use designated bike lanes for safety and to avoid traffic.
- Stay Left: It is your obligation to ride on the left if there is no bike lane.
- Follow Traffic Rules: Cyclists must respect traffic signals and signs just like any other road user.
- Wear Reflective Gear: This helps drivers spot you, especially at night or during cloudy weather.
- Check Your Bike: Regularly inspect your brakes, tires, and lights to make sure everything is in working order.
Fines for Cyclists in Cyprus
If we’re being honest, the cycling rules and fines for not following them are still a bit unclear in Cyprus. What is clear is that the fines can be large. Up to 1,000 Euros!
Here are a few examples, though we can’t promise this is exactly right and we know it’s not comprehensive. The point is, follow the rules not just for your safety, but to avoid fines you will not want to pay!
- No Helmet: Can result in a fine of €50.
- No Lights at Night: Riding without lights during dark hours can result in a fine of €85.
- Traffic Violations: Ignoring traffic signals, riding against traffic, or cycling on pedestrian-only areas can lead to fines ranging from €50 to €200 depending on the violation.
Stay Equipped, Stay Safe
Cycling is both fun and eco-friendly, but safety comes first. Following these simple tips will keep you safe and help avoid unnecessary fines.
