Asylum Seekers

To open a bank account, you will need the following documents:

  • Alien Registration Certificate
  • Confirmation Letter
  • Proof of residency stamped by the mukhtar* (e.g., house contract or proof of residency signed by Welfare)

Recognized Refugee / International Protection Holder

To open a bank account, you will need the following documents:

  • Residence Permit (or, if you do not have the permit yet, your Receipt of Application)
  • Acceptance Letter and Confirmation Letter
  • Proof of residency stamped by the mukhtar* (e.g., house contract or proof of residency signed by Welfare)

*In Cyprus, a mukhtar is a local community leader or village head who acts as an official intermediary for administrative tasks. They are responsible for certifying residency and other local documents. To find your local mukhtar, you can visit your municipality or community office or search online, as most mukhtars are listed on Google Maps. The mukhtar’s stamp on your rent agreement or proof of residency is an official confirmation of your address, which is required for various bureaucratic processes, such as opening a bank account or accessing certain government services. The cost of the stamp is typically around €5-€10, depending on the document being certified.
