Civil Defence Reminds Public About Evacuation Shelter Protocols

Cyprus Civil Defence has issued an important reminder to the public about how to find and use evacuation shelters if the need arises, following a recent drone strike on the British RAF Akrotiri air force base.

Authorities emphasised that, during uncertain and rapidly changing situations, residents should be aware of the procedures that help protect themselves and their families. Sirens will be activated in affected areas, and announcements will be broadcast on radio and television to guide people to the nearest designated shelter.

To make locating shelters easier, Civil Defence encourages the public to download the SafeCY mobile application, which shows the nearest shelter either by using location services or by entering an address. Alternatively, people can call the Civil Defence on 22 403451 or 22 403452 for information.

If you are unable to reach a shelter, officials recommend staying in a safe indoor area, such as a room with solid walls, an underground car park, or another sturdy space within your home or workplace. Staying indoors is always preferable to remaining outside during an emergency.

Civil Defence also advises preparing an emergency kit in advance with essential items such as water, dry food, a torch, batteries, a portable radio, first aid supplies, medication, important documents, and, if needed, baby food.

In the event of an alarm, people are urged to proceed calmly to the closest shelter and to follow the instructions given by authorities. Staying informed through reliable sources and remaining calm are key to ensuring safety in these situations
