New Pilot Study Program for Third-Country Nationals in Cyprus
A new pilot initiative called “Visitor – Program Participation” has been launched by the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection in Cyprus.
Who It Covers
The program is intended for third-country nationals (non-EU/EEA citizens) who wish to enrol in courses lasting more than four months at educational or training institutions approved by either the Department of Civil Aviation or the Deputy Ministry of Shipping. Importantly, these courses are not in higher-education institutions (universities). (Politis)
What Has Changed
The program fills a gap for those who do not meet the standard criteria for a student visa yet wish to study in Cyprus. Through this scheme, eligible individuals can obtain a temporary residence permit specifically for educational purposes under this pilot. (CBN)
How Many Permits & Application Process
In its first year of implementation, the programme will issue up to 200 permits total — split 100 permits for each approving authority. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. (Knews)
Applications must be submitted to the Central Offices of the Department of Immigration in Nicosia. The fee for issuing or renewing the temporary residence permit is €70, and an additional €70 is required for first registration in the Aliens Registry. (CBN)
Why This Matters
- If you are a non-EU national who wants to study in Cyprus but don’t qualify for a standard student visa, this route offers an alternative pathway.
- You can enrol in training or long-term course programmes (over four months) at approved institutions and apply for the residence permit under this pilot.
- You must carefully check that the institution is approved by the relevant authority (Shipping or Civil Aviation) and that your course qualifies under the scheme.
- Be aware of deadlines and the limited number of permits (200)—applications submitted early have an advantage.
- Be prepared to pay the specified fees and to apply at the identified immigration office.
