How Refugees Can Apply for a Driver’s License in Cyprus
Obtaining a driver’s license is an important step toward independence and integration in Cyprus. While asylum seekers are not eligible to apply for a driver’s license, recognized refugees can do so under specific conditions.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a driver’s license in Cyprus as a refugee, you need to:
- Have been working for at least 6 months in Cyprus
- Provide your Social Insurance Statement (available from the Social Insurance Office in Strovolos)
- Present a passport
The Challenge of the Passport Requirement
For many refugees, the passport requirement is a challenge because passports are collected by the Asylum Services upon arrival in Pournara Camp. This means that even recognized refugees may not have their passport available.
Practical Tip
If you are in this situation, you can try going directly to the Ministry of Transportation in Latsia (near the General Hospital). Even without an appointment, staff there may accept your application without the passport requirement.
Costs and Driving Lessons
To apply for the driving exam, you need to complete 10 hours of training with a certified driving instructor.
- If you already know how to drive, the instructor may validate your 10 hours.
- After completing the lessons, you can register for the exam.
The exam fees are divided into two parts:
- €10 before the exam
- €20 after the exam
While the process has some obstacles, refugees who meet the work and documentation requirements can apply for a driver’s license and take the necessary steps toward mobility and autonomy in Cyprus. For assistance, it is recommended to visit the Ministry of Transportation in Latsia directly and discuss your situation with the staff.
