Pregnancy in Cyprus: The First Months
The first weeks of pregnancy can feel exciting, but also overwhelming. Many questions may come up: When should I see a doctor? What tests do I need? What do I bring with me? This article gives you a simple guide to what usually happens during the first months of pregnancy in Cyprus.
Your First Medical Appointment (6–8 weeks)
It is very important to book your first appointment with a gynecologist between 6 and 8 weeks of pregnancy. This is the stage when complications can be detected and treated early.
At this appointment, you can expect:
- Questions about your medical history – the doctor will ask about your health, your family’s health, and past pregnancies.
- General check-up – including weight and blood pressure.
- Physical examination.
- Ultrasound – to confirm the pregnancy and check how many weeks you are.
- Prescriptions for tests – blood tests (for infections, iron levels, blood sugar) and a urine test (to check for infection).
👉 After this visit, your doctor may recommend starting prenatal vitamins such as folic acid, calcium, and iron.
What to Bring to Every Appointment
- Medical documents
- Any test results you already have
- Phone charger
- An extra set of clothes
- Water and a healthy snack
These small preparations can make long waiting times easier.
Following Appointments
During pregnancy, you will see the doctor many times. In the beginning, visits usually happen every 4 weeks. Later, as you get closer to giving birth, appointments will be every 1–2 weeks.
At future visits, you can expect:
- More general check-ups (weight, blood pressure).
- Ultrasounds at the hospital’s ultrasound department.
- Possible visits to other specialists (cardiologist, dietician, endocrinologist), depending on your health.
If you don’t speak English or Greek, we strongly recommend bringing someone who can help with translation. This makes communication with doctors much easier.
You Are Not Alone
Pregnancy can feel confusing, especially in a new country. At Caritas Cyprus, we want you to feel supported and informed. Every two weeks, we hold a session called “Having a Baby in Cyprus” at our Migrant Center. These meetings are a chance to:
- Learn more about pregnancy care and the health system in Cyprus.
- Ask questions directly to our staff and volunteers.
- Meet other women who are pregnant and share experiences.
Check our weekly schedule to see when the next session is happening — and join us!
Final Tip
Always keep a folder with your medical documents and test results. This helps you and your doctor follow your pregnancy safely and clearly.
Remember: the first months are just the beginning of your journey. With the right care and support, you can feel more confident and prepared. And Caritas Cyprus is here to walk with you every step of the way. 🤝
