What is a Mukhtar and how to find yours?

In Cyprus, you’ll likely need to interact with a mukhtar at some point —like when you need to get your rental contract stamped for proof of address. If you’re not familiar with the term, don’t worry, here’s a quick breakdown to help you navigate this important local role!

A Mukhtar (Greek: μουχτάρης), formally known as a community registrar/leader (Greek: κοινοτάρχης), is a local official unique to Cyprus and its surrounding region. Mukhtars oversee smaller communities, complementing the role of mayors by staying closely connected to their neighborhoods. Their responsibilities vary, from recording heirs to verifying cohabitation for official purposes.

When submitting a proof of address to government agencies, you might need to have your rental contract stamped by your local mukhtar. However, finding the correct mukhtar can sometimes be challenging. There’s no central registry for mukhtars, and if you live near the border of two communities, it’s not always clear who is responsible for your area.

How to find your Mukhtar?

Start Locally: The best way to locate your mukhtar is to ask your landlord or neighbors. Alternatively, shops or community centers nearby can often point you in the right direction.

Consult Lists: If local inquiries don’t yield results, the following lists may help you identify the mukhtar serving your area. Note that these lists are not exhaustive:

  1. Nicosia:
  2. Limassol:
  3. Larnaca:
