If your asylum status changes. What next?

You’ve applied for asylum in Cyprus and have waited patiently. Now, you expect to receive news on your case. Below are the possible outcomes and decisions you will need to make.

(See our post on Asylum Basics to know how long your application should take to process.)

What happens if my asylum file is suddenly closed?

You need to make sure that you keep your records up to date at the Asylum Service office. If you changed your address or telephone number, you need to inform Asylum Service/Immigration office immediately.

If Asylum Service officers cannot reach you, your file will be closed. You can request reopening of the file but it may take a few months during which you do not have the status of an asylum seeker and no rights, including right to residence (you may be detained if stopped by the police).

What happens when the Asylum Service office reaches a decision about your case?

You will be called by the Asylum Service office to collect the decision in person. Alternatively, the decision may be sent to you by registered post.

Asylum Service may decide to grant you international protection (recognized refugee or subsidiary protection status) or reject your asylum claim.

Your status as an asylum seeker does not change until you receive the decision in person.

What happens if my asylum application is rejected?

Once your asylum application is rejected, you need to review your claim for asylum and consider your options carefully. You have a right to appeal to the Asylum Service decision but you will need to convince the court of the validity of your claims.

Watch our video series from 2020, which is still up to date, for instructions on how to appeal.

Alternatively, you may want to consider voluntarily returning to your country. To learn more, read our post on Voluntary Return.
